Dr. George Kraus and his research group have discovered a number of tandem organic reactions. Using a reagent that catalyzes both reactions, they have generated tricyclic adducts bearing as many as five stereogenic centers from an acyclic precursor. For example, they synthesized the natural product isoligularone using a tandem Diels-Alder/ene reaction. Dr. Kraus has developed practical methods to generate alkenes from carboxylic acids using palladium catalysts. Recently, his group produced 4-substituted benzoic acids from pyrones using a palladium mediated cycloaddition/dehydrogenation/decarboxylation reaction.
